Make Your Vote Count At The Grocery Store

Have you ever considered that each item you put into your cart and purchase counts as one vote? So you may vote several times in one trip to the grocery store.

Now take a look at your cart and what do you see? Are you filling your cart with mostly whole unprocessed or minimally processed fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, brown rice, oatmeal, dried beans, nuts/seeds, plain dairy, lean meats? Or does your cart reflect the Standard American Diet (SAD) filled with sugary cereals, processed meats like hot dogs and bacon, breads made from refined flours, breaded chicken nuggets, packaged cookies, soda, and high sugar juices.

The items you choose to purchase let your local grocer know what you want to see more of on the shelves. This is very powerful because you can send the message that you want more fresh foods and less variety of the processed junk foods that contribute to our obesity epidemic which is now affecting our children. A typical grocery store has over 40,000 items stocked on its shelves. This is a staggering number and close to 80% of the available food is highly processed and in no way beneficial for creating sustainable healthy living.

With that food for thought. What changes do you look forward to making the next time you vote at the grocery store? Please share here.
