Skip Spooky GMO Candy: Healthy Halloween Treats and Candy Alternatives

Halloween is just a few weeks away! This was one of my favorite holidays all year as a kid. I loved going out to trick-or-treat every single year (even as a high school senior – yes I’m that cool!). Now as a homeowner, we get to hand out candy to the neighborhood kids. I love answering the door to say hello and see their costumes and give them a yummy treat. I wouldn’t call candy healthy but it’s a time honored tradition and just so much fun. What spooks me now is that so much of the candy we grew up eating is full of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).
Why skip GMOs?
GMOs are bad for the planet and your body, here’s why:

  • GMO foods are bred for herbicide tolerance (they kill weeds and bugs) – this has resulted in superweeds and superbugs (Yikes!)
  • GMOs kill bees which are needed to pollinate the fruits and veggies that grow on farms
  • Increased allergies in people
  • Antibiotic resistant bacteria that requires stronger antibiotics to clear up
  • Over 60 countries ban GMOs and/or require labeling, sadly not the US
  • GMOs have not been fully studied, why eat something we know could harm us but we don’t know exactly how

healthy trick or treats (640x480)

GMO filled candy: Hershey’s, M&Ms, Mars, Milky Way, Snickers. Most of the popular brands we all know and love are full of GMOs. Boohoo, but there’s a better way!

Now here’s a list of non-GMO candy: Endangered Species Chocolate, Unreal brand candies (they have snickers, M&Ms, reese’s cup type candies only made with real ingredients), Annie’s brands, Yummy Earth Organic Candy.

For non-GMO candy and other foods, check out this website from non-GMO Verified Project: http://www.nongmoproject.org/find-non-gmo/search-participating-products/

Avoid spooky GMOs in your Halloween candy. Last year I bought Annie’s Homegrown Bunny Grahams so cute and wonderful. Mix with dried fruit and nuts for a healthy snack. And Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops.
Skip candy altogether and handout these fun items:

  1. Stickers or temporary tattoos
  2. Halloween prizes from Michaels, Dollar Tree, Target
  3. Fruit leather
  4. Whole fruits such as apples or mini tangerines
  5. Mini notepads or pencils
  6. Magnets
  7. Mini apple juice boxes

Save Big At Sustainable Bedner’s Farm

I love a good bargain, but when it comes to my health and the health of my family, I can only bargain so low – that I why I skip on processed foods, they are so expensive! Good thing we have a local farm with fresh produce that is grown in a SUSTAINABLE way. I spoke with the owner at Bedner’s and he told me they have not used pesticides or herbicides for 4 generations!! How wonderful is that :). I was beaming with joy when he told me! He said to get certified organic, they would have to shut down operations and the cost of their produce would be much higher. I’m glad he chose to stick with being a SUSTAINABLE farm and not organic.

bedners (2) (480x640)

This week I went to Bedner’s and spent $35 on SUSTAINABLE and local produce!! This is what I got:

·        3 Baby bok choy, 3 large carrots for juicing,

·        2 macintosh apples, 5 organic gala apples ,

·        2 barlett pears, 2 bunches of beets,

·        2# bag onions, 1 bunch kale, watercress, cilantro,

·        4 lemons, 3 limes, 4 red bell peppers, 4 Georgia peaches,

·        2 bunches asparagus, 2 haas avocados, dried dates.

This much produce from the grocery store would have cost twice as much or more.

Bedner’s Farm located on 441 in Boynton Beach

This colorful delight below is my Superfood Salad, made with: watercress, red bell peppers, avocado, pumpkin seeds, and goji berries. I topped it off with lavender vinegar from The Ancient Olive in Delray Beach for an antioxidant rich lunch!

Juicing: Is It Good For You?

Ever wonder if you should start juicing? Here are some helpful tips to help you decide. This is a guest post provided by Sarah Brimhall of Liquid Health, Inc. Thanks for the informative post Sarah!

Continuing to gain popularity is the idea of juicing as a way to detox your body or a means to lose weight. Juicing is when fruits and vegetables are squeezed, pressed, or mashed to extract the juice from the rest of the food, for quick and easy consumption. The idea is that by ingesting these things in juice form we are giving our digestive system a rest, as well as easily increasing our daily intake of many important vitamins and nutrients. While it sounds great in theory, here are a few things to consider:

One of the first things to consider is the time spent juicing. It can be a drawback for many people, at least it is for me. You could easily find yourself spending hours preparing your fruits and vegetables, juicing them and then cleaning your machine. You can make juices ahead of time, they should last for 24-48 hours when kept cold. Some of the nutrients will dissipate at time goes, but you can shake up the juice if it separates and enjoy some in the afternoon that you made fresh that morning or the morning before.

By extracting the juice and leaving behind the meat or pulp of the fruit or vegetable, you are missing out on a very import thing: fiber. Fiber can help with everything from lowering a person’s cholesterol, regulating blood sugar to preventing constipation. The fact is, most American’s do not get enough fiber in their diets already, so utilizing something like juicing on a regular or exclusive basis further reduces our intake of this very important nutrient. Juicing is beneficial for those with chronic digestive conditions such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis, when less fiber is ideal. Juicing can be very helpful for these conditions.

Juicing does provide an alternative for people who have a hard time eating their daily recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. These foods are extremely important to achieving and maintaining a healthy life. Because of its liquid form, juicing does allow your body to absorb the vitamins, minerals and nutrients contained in the juice much easier than when eating their wholefood counterparts. This is much like taking a liquid vitamin supplement. A liquid daily multiple, such as Liquid Health’s Complete Multiple, provides whole food based vitamins, minerals and nutrients, as well as the all important fiber that’s missing when fruits and vegetables are juiced.

It’s important to be aware of your fruit and vegetable intake and what your daily needs are. It is recommended that we have 2 cups (4 servings) of fruits and 2.5 cups (5 servings) of vegetables a day. The thing to be careful of when drinking fruit and vegetable juice is that it can be really dense with calories and not fill you up the way eating that same fruit or vegetables would, so you can really add to your caloric intake if you’re not careful.

Nothing can replace a healthy diet and consistent exercise, but juicing does provide an option for increasing our daily intake of many important vitamins and nutrients. At the end of the day, juicing is better than not eating those fruits and vegetables at all. But, as with most things, moderation is key to insure a healthy balance of everything our body needs to function on a healthy and efficient level.

Simple Steps To A Healthier You!

Do you want to eat healthier but think it’s too complicated or means only eating salads? There are so many simple steps you can take to enhance your health. It starts by taking action today and jumping in for the challenge! You are worth it and wouldn’t it be wonderful to feel great and look fabulous, and have a healthy?

Top 10 Tips to a Healthier You:

  1. Add creamy avocado slices to your burgers and sandwiches instead of mayo or fancy aioli (i.e. mayo) spreads.
  2. Skip the deep-fried french fries and order baked sweet potato instead or grilled veggies.
  3. Start the day with a big glass of water and squeeze a whole lemon or lime in the glass, this will hydrate and alkalize your body instantly! You’ll hydrate and get a boost of energy first thing in the morning.
  4. Make quinoa instead of white rice, they both take 20 minutes to cook. Quinoa is a superfood and contains more protein, fiber, and healthy nutrients than white rice. It’s absorbed slower in your body for sustained energy too.
  5. Upgrade your peanut butter to one made with just peanuts and salt, skip the ones with added sugars and oils. Try almond butter too.
  6. Switch from conventional milk to Organic milk or yogurt. Organic dairy tastes better and it’s not full of antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, or added hormones.
  7. Shred carrot or zucchini into your favorite pasta sauce. It will thicken it up and add tons of nutrients!
  8. Make kale chips for a snack instead of fried potato chips. Check out Michelle’s of www.FindYourBalanceHealth.com tasty kale chips tips and recipe: http://findyourbalancehealth.com/2012/08/how-to-make-the-perfect-kale-chip/ Kick up the flavor with chili-lime kale chips: http://findyourbalancehealth.com/2010/07/chili-lime-kale-chips/
  9. Skip the coffee and drink green tea. Why you ask? Green tea is chock full of antioxidants and is an alkalizing drink, coffee is highly acidic and can disrupt digestion, cause jitters and keep you up late. Green tea contains far less caffeine so you get a milder lift. Choose decaf green tea or herbal tea later in the day so it won’t interrupt your sleep cycle.
  10. Eat organic apples! They are on the dirty dozen list rated for higher pesticides than other produce. Check out the EWG (Environmental Working Group) list for the full dirty dozen list: http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php to be in the know of produce is highly recommended to purchase organic. Also, check out the clean fifteen list on the same page that reveals the 15 fruits and veggies with the least amount of pesticides so you can skip organic.
